Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Truck Driver Instructor is responsible for providing instruction and monitoring teaching/learning effectiveness in the area of Commercial Truck Driving.
Instructor will provide students with the understanding and skills necessary to safely operate commercial vehicles and meet industry workforce needs.
Requires strong training and communication skills, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal skills.
Physical Presence on Campus The position requires office hours and physical presence on campus.
Employee must reside in the Laredo area or be able to commute to campus daily.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities Provide instruction that will achieve the specific goals and objectives as stated in the syllabus of the assigned courses and create a wholesome, meaningful learning environment in the classroom.
Present a positive attitude toward teacher-student learning relationships.
Follow daily lesson plans to ensure quality, consistency, and uniformity of instruction and student conduct.
Keep accurate attendance records and submit required class documents in a timely manner.
Provide students with information about the goals and requirements of each course, the nature of the course content and the methods of evaluation to be employed including required classroom behavior.
Measure each student’s progress through the use of written exams or performance assessments essential to mastery of unit objectives.
Endorse student skill advancement reports and advise students on their progress covering course material.
Provide supplemental materials and/or instruction when necessary.
Be responsible for the efficient and safe operation, care, and appearance of assigned equipment.
Must be able to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.
Develop and maintain relationships with prospective employers in the truck driving industry so as to keep current with employer demands, industry updates, regulations, and facilitate placement for graduating students.
Work with Department of Public Safety personnel on an as needed basis.
Assist students with DPS exam scheduling.
Represent LC at job fairs, informational fairs, orientations, etc.
to present information about the truck driving career, when necessary.
Work a flexible schedule as determined by instructional activities.
Must be able to participate in professional development activities, as required by the program of Instruction, including local, in-state and out-of-state conferences, meetings, events, etc.
Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Continuing Education, Dean of Community Education, VP of Instruction and/or President.

Required: High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Three years of experience in over-the-road driving.
Must be proficient in MS Office Outlook, Excel, and Word.
A current Class A Commercial Driver’s License, including appropriate endorsement(s) to operate a commercial motor vehicle for which training is to be provided Must maintain requirements for Class A Commercial Driver’s License including appropriate endorsements.
A current DOT physical medical card must be renewed on an annual basis.
Preferred: Associates Degree A minimum of two years of experience as a behind-the-wheel commercial motor vehicle Instructor.
School Bus and Passenger endorsements, and HAZMAT, Tanker, Double & Triples endorsements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Substantial knowledge of CDL requirements, rules, and regulations.
Ability to teach the necessary skills for students to earn a State of Texas Class A Commercial License Ability to pass a background check, drug test, and physical exam on an annual basis.
Ability to maintain accurate records, assemble and organize data Must be ethical when evaluating student outcomes Ability to maintain excellent working relationships with the program staff and participants Must be knowledgeable, mature, and concerned with the academic progress of participants Bilingual preferred Possess basic knowledge of routine maintenance and repairs of Tractor-Trailer units Must demonstrate enthusiasm Must be a self-starter and positive role model Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form Ability to instruct and maintain emotional control under stress Additional Information Supervision Exercised Supervision Received Director of Continuing Education & Workforce Development Coordinator Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment Work is performed in a standard office environment.
Work inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.
